Due to its characteristics and operation, it is a port that requires two phases for the handling of cargo. The process of loading or unloading is done by means of barges (only for merchant ships). An area of anchorage or a pilot station is located at a distance of 3,5 miles of the wharf. It´s got a channel, a natural access with an average depth of (5 ms), allowing the free navigation of tugboats, barges, shallow-draft vessels (fishing ships). The channel has illuminated signaling buoys, suitably located to allow safe orientation (it guides) for navigation.
The field of floating buoys is located at 3 miles from the shore, in addition there are 2 extra buoys, one that indicates the position of the end of the underwater pipeline for unloading at the berthing position, and another one that indicates the end of the rigid pipeline (with a length of 5,2 km and an 18 inch diameter), the beginning of the line of a flexible hose (seven hose sections with a length of 30 feet each and a 12 inch diameter) and finally one buoy signaling the risky area (rocks).
Berths (Floating Buoys)
Due to its characteristic of being a port that requires two phases for the handling of cargo, it has two berths, one for attention to merchant ships (solid bulk cargo , steel, zinc etc.) and another one for exclusive attention to tankers (liquid bulk cargo).
The maximum depth allowed for this berth is of 12 meters and the maximum length of the tankers is limited to 260 meters as a safety measure.
In this berth there is a buoy that holds in place the underwater line that is connected to the ship to transfer the cargo to the receiving tanks on shore.
Berths for tankers
This berth is made up of a system of 6 floating metal buoys to guarantee stability to the ship when mooring. The buoys are linked with a chain to an anchor of 10 MT and a concrete counterbalance of 9 MT.
The maximum depth allowed for this berth is of 12 meters and the maximum length of the tankers is limited to 260 meters as a safety measure.

Berths for Merchant Ships
This berth is made up of a system of 4 floating metal mooring buoys (to give stability to the ship),tied with a chain to an anchor of 10 MT and a concrete counterbalance of 9 MT. and four more buoys for the anchorage of barges. The maximum depth allowed for this berth is of 10,5 meters and the maximum length of the ships is 245 meters.
