The multipurpose quay of Puerto Cabezas is located in Bilwi, Departmental Capital of the Región Autónoma del Atlántico Norte (Independent Region of the North Atlantic or RAAN) of Nicaragua. Its geographic borders limit with Cabo Gracias a Dios to the north, Prinzapolca to the south, the Caribbean to the east and Rosita and Waspán to the west.
The Multipurpose quay of Puerto Cabezas is located at latitude 14º 01’00¨ north ,and longitude 83º23’00¨east was damaged by Hurricane Felix in2007. The authorities of the National Port Company immediately responded to this emergency. The entire pier was strengthened with 210 wooden poles, 173 of them located in the area that was most severely damaged.
But the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity, acting through the National Port Company, hopes to start the construction of a concrete pier, thanks to the support of the ALBA program, which would be located to the north of the existing pier. This project would allow to receive ships of 10 thousand tons.
The port currently has a wooden 420 mts. long pier, and it has two berths, one with a depth of 5.5. mts. for international ships, and another one for small local fishing boats.
At the northern part of the pier there are three pipelines with a four inch diameter each for unloading petroleum derivatives that are stored directly in tanks of PETRONIC.
The pier has 13 clusters, which allows safe dockage for the international Ships at starboard and port side depending on present conditions.
