The port of San Carlos is located in the Department of Río San Juan, in San Carlos, the department´s main city, and the main entrance and exit for people who visit the region.  It is the main commercial center of the Department of Río San Juan.
It is a very important port for the region, as it is the starting point for transport routes to: El Castillo, Boca de Sábalo, Los Chiles de Costa Rica, Papaturro, San Miguel, Morrito and the Archipelago of Solentiname.
The city where the quay is located has a small aerodrome that connects directly with the international airport of Managua;   there is also a bus Terminal with routes to the capital and to different towns and cities of the Río San Juan Department.
The access channel is 8Kms long, has been dredged in previous years, and has a depth of approximately 8 feet.  It is signalized with a system of buoys, that allows for safe navigation 24 hours a day, as the buoys have reflective painting on the upside, which makes them – and the navigable waterway - easy to spot.
